American Contemporary Ballet Presents Astaire Dances

American Contemporary Ballet Presents Astaire Dances
Anyone looking to thrill a sweetheart this February might want to take their cue from one of the smoothest operators of all time. In the run-up to Valentine’s Day, American Contemporary Ballet pays tribute to the genius of Fred Astaire with recreations of some of his most famous dances. Astaire Dances is a reminder that few made dance (or romance) look more elegant – or more effortless. Who else could build up to a kiss with a dance sequence so spectacular that the actual smooch was an anti-climax?

Though the company is dedicated to producing contemporary classical ballet, ACB Artistic Director Lincoln Jones says Astaire also defined great dance. The company first presented Astaire Dances in its third season, and it quickly became one of its most popular programs, selling out most performances.

This year, ACB introduces a new cinematic lineup. Short comic dialogues are followed by recreations of dances from four iconic films: You Were Never Lovlier, Silk Stockings, The Belle of New York and The Bandwagon, followed by an original number in the style of Astaire choreographed by Jones.

For those who like their romance in black and white, tasting faintly of champagne and set against a skyscraper backdrop of sparkling city lights, ACB sets the ideal scene. And who knows? Springing for two tickets versus 12 long-stems may well be worth hearing a date quote the master-romancer himself. “Why didn’t you tell me I was in love with you?”
