American Contemporary Ballet Premieres Death and the Maiden
THE END IS NEAR. ACB WRAPS 8th SEASON WITH A SMALL REMINDER:
You Will Die

The memento mori, often represented by a human skull, is a reminder to its owner that life is finite. In the final program of its eighth season in Los Angeles, American Contemporary Ballet presents a memento mori audiences won't soon forget.

When the composer Franz Schubert knew his own death was imminent, he wrote his testament to mortality in “Death and the Maiden,” a string quartet which has haunted its listeners for centuries, serving to this day as a sendoff at state funerals and the sonic centerpiece of a number of brooding films and plays.

The score reflects Schubert’s deep connection to the subject matter. Despite having one of the most prolific legacies of any composer, Schubert was taken at the height of his creative powers at the age of 31. As an icon, Death and the Maiden is depicted throughout Renaissance art as a young maiden being accosted by a skeleton, an admonition that even those in the bloom of youth can be taken at any time.

Audiences have come to anticipate the unexpected from ACB Artistic Director Lincoln Jones, who is choreographing his first work to Schubert’s music. What viewers can expect beginning August 1 is a ballet that’s as beautiful as its score – and as unsettling as the theme that inspired it.

ACB performs exclusively to live music, and each show is followed by a reception with wine, jazz and the opportunity to talk with the company’s dancers and musicians.
