Astaire Dances 2: Fred & Ginger

Astaire Dances 2: Fred & Ginger
Who cares? Anyone interested in the city’s most romantic way to celebrate the holiday: American Contemporary Ballet’s Astaire Dances 2: Fred & Ginger. No pair was more famous for setting romance and glamour in motion, and ACB invites audiences to get swept away in its stylish February tribute to Astaire’s brilliant choreography.

The show, running February 2-17 at the Cooper Design Space, takes five of the duo’s most captivating dances from the big screen to the dance floor, bringing them from black and white to Technicolor life with “Smoke Gets in Your Eyes” (Roberta); “Cheek to Cheek” (Top Hat); “Let’s Call the Whole Thing Off” (Shall We Dance); “Never Gonna Dance” (Swing Time); and “Let’s Face the Music and Dance” (Follow the Fleet).

Set to a Gershwin score, the jazzy ballet includes the suite’s rarely performed finale to “Clap Yo’ Hands,” but it’s the three flirtatious, charming pas de deux that is making ACB dancers swoon. “There are these beautiful moments of hesitation followed by moments of giving in,” says ACB soloist Elise Filo. “It reminds me of that scary, thrilling feeling of falling in love with someone for the first time – it’s a feeling I can’t describe in words, but in dance, I’m there in an instant.”
