Art Talk: Jill Moniz and Paige Wery

Art Talk: Jill Moniz and Paige Wery
Join us at The Good Luck Gallery for a timely dialogue between curators jill moniz and Paige Wery, Saturday April 20th at 2pm. Wery and moniz will discuss the current exhibition at The Good Luck Gallery, Breadth – guest curated by moniz – in the context of the exhibition Outliers and American Vanguard Art, which originated at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., and was on view at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art through March 17. As contemporary female curators, each engaging with issues of representation in a variety of contexts, moniz, and Wery approached Outliers and American Vanguard Art from disparate viewpoints that compliment the other’s body of knowledge.

While Wery has been instrumental in guiding Outsider art to the forefront of the Los Angeles art conversation, moniz brings an art historical context and academic perspective to the discussion. Outliers and American Vanguard Art, which features both formally trained and self-taught artists, often side-by-side, inadvertently raises questions of identity, classifications, and who has the power to label, qualify, and contextualize art and the makers who create it.
jill moniz’s interests focus on building understanding, creativity and inclusivity through the arts. She worked in community engagement at Museum of Latin American Art before becoming head curator at the California African American Museum in 2006. Then, moniz served as curator to Dr. Leon O Banks, a founding trustee of MOCA, before returning in 2013 to large-scale exhibitions in museums and galleries around the world. In 2016, she founded Quotidian with Francine Kelly, a curatorial investigative space supporting local artists and building visual literacy. Dr. moniz serves as an advisor for community engagement and programming for the Getty Center, and advises museums, galleries and collectors throughout California. She holds a doctorate in cultural anthropology from Indiana University.

Paige Wery is the owner and curator of The Good Luck Gallery, the only commercial space in Los Angeles dedicated to showing Self-taught art including Outsider, Folk and Visionary work. Before opening The Good Luck Gallery in early 2014, she spent six years as the publisher and advertising director of Artillery Magazine, a contemporary art print publication based in Los Angeles. Paige has served on the board of MOCA Contemporaries, the executive board of Art Table’s Southern California chapter and on the founding board of the Los Angeles Downtown Art Walk.

Our Chung King Road neighbors, Coagula Curatorial and Lisa Derrick Gallery will be hosting art talks at 3pm and 4pm the same day.

We look forward to seeing you at The Good Luck Gallery for this lively discussion, with questions and participation welcomed!
