All MOCA members are welcome to attend the advance viewing of Dan Graham: Beyond, the first North American survey of one of the foremost figures in contemporary art.
Dan Graham: Beyond is the first North American retrospective of the art of Dan Graham (b.1942, Urbana, Illinois), examining his entire body of work in a focused selection of photographs, film and video, architectural models, indoor and outdoor pavilions, conceptual projects for magazine pages, drawings and prints, and writings. Graham has been a central figure in the development of contemporary art since the 1960s—from the rise of minimalism, conceptual art, and video and performance art, to explorations of architecture and the public sphere and collaborations with musicians and the culture of rock and roll. This exhibition traces the evolution of his practice across each of its major stages, while asserting ongoing themes, most notably, the changing relationship of the individual to society as filtered through American mass media and architecture at the end of the 20th century. Dan Graham: Beyond will be accompanied by a fully illustrated, scholarly catalogue.

Founded by Yoshiharu Tsukamoto and Momoyo Kaijima in 1992, Tokyo-based architecture studio Atelier Bow-Wow explores the use and function of space within urban environments. Bow-Wow developed the term "pet architecture" – a style of small, ad hoc, multifunctional structures that make the most of limited space. Using the framework of art galleries or museums to experiment with form and behavior, Bow-Wow's newly commissioned project for REDCAT is the culmination of an extended Los Angeles residency period, during which Tsukamoto and Kaijima researched the Case Study House program and made this postwar project a point of departure in thinking about domestic dwellings.
Informed by the principles of the program – which enlisted architects to design low-cost homes for the masses with prefabricated materials – as well as the urban dynamics of contemporary Los Angeles, Bow-Wow's Small Case Study House responds to contemporary models for housing in L.A. as they relate to concepts of customization, re-use, and "architectural behaviorology." This is Atelier Bow-Wow's first solo exhibition in the United States.

L.A. Unfolded: Maps from the Los Angeles Public Library
The exhibition focuses on Los Angeles and California and features topographic surveys, tourist guides, real estate maps, pictorials, illustrations and more. Highlights include a 1791 Spanish explorers’ California coast map; a 1975 Goetz Guide to the Murals of East Los Angeles; and Artist-Historian Jo Mora’s masterly illustrated 1942 city map. The exhibition draws exclusively from the Los Angeles Public Library’s own map collection, one of the largest collections owned by a public library in the U.S.
The exhibition will also display the winning entries of neighborhood maps created by student participants in the Los Angeles Public Library’s 2008 teen summer reading program. Along with the exhibition, free ALOUD lectures called the “Ground Truth” series will take place on three Sundays this fall in Central Library’s Mark Taper Auditorium. The series takes its name from the practice of checking the accuracy of a map or aerial image by visiting the actual location.
The Fine Art of Film Posters: Selections from the Los Angeles Public Library Collection
Historic posters portraying the early days of Hollywood movies with beautiful women, mysterious men and intriguing plots are on display in the exhibit “The Fine Art of Film Posters: Selections from the Los Angeles Public Library Collection,” at the Central Library’s First Floor Galleries, 630 W. Fifth St., downtown, through March 8, 2009. The exhibit is free and open to the public during regular library hours.
The posters in the exhibit are part of a collection that was devastated by an arson fire, which destroyed the Frances Howard Goldwyn - Hollywood Regional Branch Library in 1982. With the help of the community and a $4-million contribution from Samuel Goldwyn Foundation, the collection was restored and a new branch was constructed. It opened in 1986 and is named in honor of Goldwyn’s mother, who frequently used the original library.

As a singer, producer, and songwriter, Babyface was an inescapable presence in virtually every major facet of pop music during the '90s. His own recordings helped rejuvenate the R&B tradition of the smooth, sensitive, urban crooner and made him a staple of urban contemporary radio. Yet their considerable success was eclipsed by his songwriting and production work for other artists, which linked him with some of the biggest stars and hit singles of the decade (and not just in the realm of R&B). You'd be hard pressed to name a '90s hitmaker with a track record more consistently successful and versatile than Kenny "Babyface" Edmonds.

"The Penderecki Quartet approach their musical task with style and dedication. Their playing is impeccable, and their expressive range wide and satisfying." The Globe and Mail (Toronto)
The Pendereckians have been champions of new and imaginative musicmaking for nearly a quarter century. Formed in Poland at the behest of composer Krzysztof Penderecki, the globe-trotting foursome--violinists Jeremy Bell and Jerzy Kaplanek, violist Christine Vlajk and cellist Simon Fryer--has performed repertoire stretching from Brahms to Zappa and premiered more than 100 new works. The longtime quartet-in-residence at Wilfrid Laurier University in Canada, the ensemble makes a welcome return to Los Angeles with a program of contemporary string quartet literature enhanced with video: Veronika Krausas' Midaregami (Tangled Hair), featuring mezzo-soprano Jacqueline Bobak; Arnold Schönberg's Entrückung, also with Bobak; George Crumb's Black Angels; and Michael Gordon's Weather Part One, featuring the quartet and a dozen CalArts players on amplified strings accompanied by live electronics.

The Fairy Queen contains some of the most seductive melodies of the Baroque period. Purcell's masque, The Fairy Queen (1692), was written approximately 100 years after Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream, on which it is based, and contains some of the most seductive melodies of the Baroque period. A fabulous cast brings the magical characters of this story to life.
Bringing Purcell's melodies to life in this Musica Angelica production are sopranos Lisa Saffer, a recipient of the Royal Philharmonic Society Award and Olivier Award nominee who has performed worldwide in opera roles, and Catherine Webster, whom LA audiences may recognize from a past appearance with Musica Angelica and from the Los Angeles Philharmonic in John Adams' Grand Pianola Music. Joining the sopranos is bass baritone Michael Dean, praised by the San Jose Mercury News as "the standout, his voice a penetrating wake-up call." Musica Angelica’s Music Director Martin Haselböck will conduct.
Also appearing is the award winning chorus, The Concord Ensemble – described as "excellent and impeccable" by the Washington Post and "clearly a group to watch out for," by Goldberg Magazine. Recently, the men of the ensemble – countertenor Paul Flight; tenors Daniel Carberg, Pablo Corá and N. Lincoln Hanks; baritone Aaron Caine; and Scott Graff, bass-baritone – performed before sold-out audiences at Walt Disney Concert Hall with rock musician Sting and Bosnian lutenist Edin Karamazov.

As The Pantry's current owner, former Los Angeles Mayor Richard Riordan likes to boast, "We never close. We're never without a customer."
Established in 1924, The Original Pantry has spent eight decades providing its customers with generous portions of traditional American cuisine. The restaurant started with 5 employees in a building at 9th and Figueroa St. It consisted of one room – a 15-stool counter, a grill and a hot plate. It wasn't long before patrons were forming lines for seats. To offset the wait, they were asked to place orders in advance. This practice continues to this day and is largely responsible for our tremendous turnover.
More than just a casual eatery, The Pantry offers diners an atmosphere rich in character and history. An integral piece of Los Angeles culture, The Pantry has served many movie stars, politicians and other celebrities and continues to be a gathering spot for the city's movers and shakers.

Located at the western gateway to Downtown, 10.5-acre Vista Hermosa Park is the latest project of the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy and the Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority (MRCA) that boldly returns the serenity and diversity of nature to the Los Angeles urban core. Developed in collaboration with the Los Angeles Unified School District and the City of Los Angeles, Vista Hermosa is the first public park built in this densely populated area in more than a hundred years.
The park features walking trails, streams, meadows, oak savannahs, picnic grounds, and a nature-themed playground amidst native Mediterranean vegetation. A FIFA-regulation soccer field will be jointly used by the adjacent Edward R. Roybal Learning Center and the L.A. Department of Recreation and Parks. An outdoor amphitheater in a grotto provides an ideal setting for environmental and natural history education, and other public events.
250 S. Grand Ave., Los Angeles, CA 90012
Los Angeles State Historic Park provides an extraordinary opportunity for recreation and education in the heart of Los Angeles. Within its 32 acres of open space directly adjacent to Chinatown, park visitors can wander pathways and enjoy a view of downtown, as well as discover and celebrate the natural and cultural heritage of Los Angeles.
You can run, walk, ride a bike, have a picnic, fly a kite and even look for urban wildlife such as birds traveling down the Pacific flyway. Do all of these things and more while inventive architectural features in the landscape hint of the park’s history. The Metro Gold Line zips past the south side of the park on raised tracks following the course of a water system which stretched from the Los Angeles River to El Pueblo in the early 1800's. It may be difficult to imagine, but this place was once a fertile basin, and within a mile of the park is the last recorded location of Yang-na, a large Tongva village. The history of the Southern Pacific Railroad’s River Station, opened in 1875, include a waterwheel, freight house, roundhouse, depot and station yard. Rows of deer grass now hint of the vanished railroad tracks, and you can stand and reflect on the travels of the thousands of people who arrived here from all over the country and world. The Pacific Hotel opened here in 1879 and once served "25 minute meals" to River Station passengers. The approximate shape of the hotel is marked today by a boundary of recycled glass.
