Hail-A-Taxi Initiative Gets a Rolling Start

Last summer, the Downtown Center Business Improvement District (DCBID), with leadership from Councilwoman Jan Perry of the 9th District, LADOT and the business community, was successful in persuading the Los Angeles City Council to allow taxi cabs to stop in "No Stopping" zones while they were actively picking-up or dropping-off fares. Prior to this protocol, taxi drivers worried about receiving hefty parking tickets for picking-up or dropping-off fares in these zones, so it was hard to hail a taxi in Downtown Los Angeles.

Now, the DCBID is spearheading an outreach program to encourage taxi drivers to get out of the lines of taxis you see in front of hotels and start cruising the streets. In order to get the taxis to start cruising the streets, we have to convince the public that they can actually hail a taxi. It's been a "Catch-22" until now.

Starting December 8th, start looking for taxis to be cruising Downtown streets between Temple Street on the north, 12th Street on the south, the 110 Freeway on the west and Main Street on the east. The area for the taxi protocol is much bigger than these boundaries, but we have to start with 'baby steps." The underlying idea is that taxi drivers can make a better living doing "short fares" all day long Downtown rather than waiting in line for a "maybe" long trip to LAX. The fare will be on a "natural meter" rather than a flat rate, so ride as little or as far as you want to restaurants, bars, nightclubs, Staples Center and the Music Center, day & night.

As a kick-off to the program, L.A. Live will be hosting a "Taxi Driver Appreciation" event on its plaza at 11am on December 8th to thank the drivers in advance for helping turn Downtown LA into a "real downtown" where you can hail a taxi.

Help us make the program work and "Hail-A-Taxi!!"

(Note: The Metro Red Line Subway is now running until 3am on Friday and Saturday nights during the Holiday Season, so take the subway, then Hail-A-Taxi near the station!)
